Estonia loses top spot in Internet freedom ranking

Estonia lost its top position in the Internet Freedom scoreboard „Freedom of the Net” compiled by Freedom House to Iceland, writes Äripäev.

In the 2013 ranking, Estonia came second with a score of 9 points. Iceland was ranked first with 6 points.

Estonia was followed by Germany (17 points), US (17 points) and Australia (18 points).

According to the report’s authors, the ranking of US was affected by the reveleations of whistleblower Edward Snowden which highlighted extensive Internet intrusion by US intelligence agencies.

The lowest-ranked countries were China, Cuba and Iran.
