Flick becomes CEO of a German charter airline

Bertolt Flick, the former CEO of the Latvian national carrier airBaltic, has been hired by one brave German airline by the name of XL Airways Germany, a charter air-line based in Frankfurt International Airport, writes news2biz.

Flick will be its new CEO and will succeed Martin Greiffenhagen who announced his resignation earlier this year, although he still continues carrying out his duties until 29 February.

The new airline seems to be more of a pot boiler and less of a bold career move for Flick – and neither does it present such great opportunities for establishing successful side businesses or moving assets out of the airline (which may be one of the reasons why it agreed to hire Flick in the first place).

It operates a fleet of just five Boeing jets; airBaltic's fleet consists of 34 planes, including 16 Boeings. Also, XL Airways does not offer any scheduled flights; airBaltic flies to dozens of destinations and carried 3.35m passengers in 2011. It is also quite safe to say that Flick will not be pulling in his sky-high salary in his new job.

Neither Flick nor the airline have provided any further comments, such as whether Flick is planning any air-Baltic-style reforms in the airline or what his first tasks at his new job will be.
