Estonian-Finnish undersea power cable out of service for days

“It’s a technical problem that started in the Harku converter station that was corrected by ABB, but then there were more problems with the cable in the Finnish side in Espoo,” is how Taavi Veskimägi, CEO of Elering that operates Estlink power cable between Estonia and Finland, explained the cause of problems.

Elering has warned that the cable could be out of service for several days. Partly because of the announcement, price of electricity in the Nordpool power exchange went up to 254 euros per MWh.

In Estonia that is a regulated market and still outside Nordpool, electricity at that time cost 54 euros per MWh.

Veskimägi added that the exchange price of power was so high right now because several nuclear power stations in Scandinavia were in normal maintenance and were not producing.
