Chief of security police: Dressen sold information to Russians for years
23.02.2012, 10:51According to Raivo Aeg, head of the Estonian security police, it has become clear that Dressen was taking orders from the counterintelligence department of FSB, Russia’s intelligence service.
Aeg said that since Dressen was banned from travelling to Russia, he was being instructed from a third country. Aeg did not say from which country FSB was managing the operation.
According to Aeg, Dressen was selling to Russians mainly information that concerned his direct specialisation, extremists, but that it also included information that he had collected when communicating with other KAPO officials.
“What I can say is that his cooperation with FSB has been going on for years,” said Aeg, admitting that Dressen had been supplying Russians with information already when he had a notably higher rank in KAPO, before 2007, when he had access to counterintelligence information.
Aeg admitted that informants such as Dressen who work in a country’s intelligence service and have access to classified information are extremely valuable which means that they can also cause major damage to the country.
“But it also means that such cooperation is extremely difficult to detect because counterintelligence services are going to great lengths to hide these contacts,” said Aeg.
