Estonian online portal Delfi that belongs to Ekspress Grupp plans to appeal the ruling made by the court in favour of businessman Vjacheslav Leedo.

„We are not happy with the court ruling since operators of such online portals cannot be responsible for the comments made by their readers,“ Andrus Raudsalu, CEO of Delfi, told Äripäev.

Raudsalu said that Delfi would appeal against the ruling. „This is not the question of compensation we must pay Leedo, but it is a principle issue,“ said Raudsalu, adding that Delfi refuses to pay damages to Leedo awarded by the court.

On Friday Harju County Court decided to uphold the action filed by businessman Vjacheslav Leedo against Delfi for personal insults made against him in comments written by the readers of Delfi and awarded Delfi to pay Leedo EEK 5,000 kroons. Leedo had claimed EEK 25,000 in damages per insulting comment or a total of half a million kroons.
