Veljo Haamer, the editor of the portal wifi.ee and WiFi initiator in Estonia would like to turn the Internet service free of charge all over the country.

Haamer told portimees.ee that the free Internet would be a welfare service that would assure access to information and would give opportunities to communicate with relatives-friends far away.

According to Haamer’s idea, the service providers would assure the access to public Internet at the speed of 128 kbits. For cutting the security risks, the person should have to identify himself before using the Internet, he added.

The mandatory identifying would allow to keep account of the users and in case needed fixing who and when used the service.

Haamer said that the state should support such activity by subsidizing companies’ expenses according to the number of users.

Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communication said that mainly operators could be interested in such service and the state should not interfere significantly.

Remo Tiigirand from the Estonian largest telecommunication and IT company Elion said they were not interested in financing such project.
