Latvian journalist arrested for speaking of devaluation

Latvian defence police arrested a journalist for spreading rumours about devaluation, Eesti Päevaleht mediates Latvian Delfi.

Latvian defence police has started two criminal proceedings for spreading devaluation rumours. The institution has turned to the media as well, asking only checked information to be published.

Defence police did not give any specific information.

Last year Latvian government accepted a law that allows penalties for spreading rumours about lat devaluation and the penalty will be harsher if the rumours are told for personal gain. Misinforming about lat devaluation can bring up to 6 years in jail.
